Donna Sutton was decorating a Christmas tree inside Sutton’s Marketplace when she realized it was time for a change.

“I thought, ‘After 40 years, how many ways can I decorate a tree?’” she recalled. “I thought, it’s just time to make a change.”

Since 1976, Sutton and her family have grown what is today Sutton’s Marketplace and Restaurant, at 1066 Route 9, from a small farm market to a multi-structure, village-style retail center a half-mile south of the Great Escape properties.

But Donna and her husband, Steven, who died in 2005 at the age of 53, had always planned to sell off the buildings they’d constructed, turning them over to other retailers one at a time until their retirement…
